AI Acceptance Remains Limited

AI acceptance remains limited

According to the latest ifo survey, just one in seven companies in Germany uses forms of artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is currently used by 13.3% of companies in Germany, 9.2% plan to use it. Another 36.7% of all companies surveyed are discussing possible application scenarios. This is the result of the current economic survey, which the Munich-based ifo Institute has compiled every month on important developments in the German economy.

“Companies from a wide range of industries are using AI applications: Among them are the automotive industry, mechanical engineering, the pharmaceutical industry and the service sector,” says industry expert Anna Wolf from the Ifo Institute. Artificial intelligence is currently used most frequently in industrial companies. Every third industrial company already uses it or is planning to use it. Among service providers and in trade, the figure is around 20%, in construction 15%. Almost all IT service providers are dealing with this topic or see possible applications.

But AI is not on the rise everywhere. For around 40% of companies in Germany, AI is currently out of the question. In the construction industry, this share is as high as 60%.

About the survey

The question about attitudes towards artificial intelligence technology was asked by the Ifo Institute on behalf of the Hanseatic Blockchain Institute in the Ifo Business Surveys in June 2023. These are based on approximately 9,000 monthly reports from companies in manufacturing, services, trade and construction. The results are calculated on the basis of the weighted shares of the companies that fall under the answer options “in use”, “planned”, “discussed” and “”not considered” in the corresponding question in the ifo Business Survey.
